Erasmus University and you. Make it happen. Every day! "It’s ok not to feel ok" (Catharina Kremer, 19, Student IBA) "I want to go to boarding school in Canada’, I told my mum one day. In our family, a lot of youngsters had done that and when I saw how enthusiastic they were, I was always keen to go too. So, 15 years old, I moved from my hometown Düsseldorf to a town close to Toronto. Exciting? Of course! But I was so busy studying and making great memories with my new friends that I didn’t have time to worry or feel homesick! As I was only 17 when I graduated, I decided to take a gap year. I wanted to travel the world, but my parents thought I was too young to go off on my own like that. Instead, as a compromise, I took language courses and worked my way around Europe, visiting countries just to see whether I would like to study there - always in the safe haven of a guest family. What I learned during my travels? In the first place, I learned to stand on my own feet. And that it’s ok not to feel ok. When I visited Toronto a while ago, it turned out that all my friends were busy studying. As I walked through the town all by myself, I had that feeling of sadness and loneliness. Instead of fighting it, you can decide to embrace it. Take it for what it is and let it pass. In that way, I’ve learned to appreciate the good times even more. Travelling is what I really love doing. At the same time, I realise that I don’t want to travel all the time. I want a diploma, build strong relationships with friends - you need a place to settle down, one way or another. But as good as it feels to come home, though, after a while I always want to leave for my next trip. It felt kind of weird when I arrived in Rotterdam and had to decorate my apartment for the next 3 years! But well, I love it here, this vibrant, international campus. Did you know that in our programme alone we have 70 different nationalities? In a few weeks’ time, it’s summer break. My plans? I’m going to Thailand for a month - backpacking. And for the first time in my life, I’m actually going to sleep in hostels and wander around!”Erasmus University and you. Make it happen. Every day!
