Erasmus University and you. Make it happen. Every day! "Talking to people is just as important as the treatment itself " (Sanne Jaarsma, 21, Student EUC, medical programme) “When I was younger, my mother switched from being a lawyer to a classic homoeopathist. For many years she enjoyed running a practice. As a child, I saw that she was often able to really help her patients. And when I myself suffered symptoms of stress at a young age, her remedies helped me too. Perhaps that’s when my interest in medicine started… My mother really took time to talk to people, that contact was a very important part of the process. But at a certain point, she began to encounter a lot of opposition and realised that she couldn’t deal with the negativity surrounding her profession. So she decided to close her practice. ‘Let someone else fight the fight,’ she said. I’m now studying medicine via Erasmus University College (EUC). It’s a funny story, actually. I’d already been accepted for a regular medicine degree in Maastricht, but I got cold feet. What if I didn’t want to become a doctor…? Via EUC I’m getting a broader education, there’s attention for not strictly medical subjects like philosophy and psychology, and I can still move into medicine. But within a year, I knew it: this is what I want to do. Soon I’ll be doing a transition year and then I’ll go on to my residencies. The route via EUC is sometimes regarded as a ‘shortcut’, and that might be the case for some people, but for me it was a very conscious choice. What do I want to be? Perhaps a GP. Talking to people about their symptoms, lifestyle, acknowledging them is just as important as the treatment itself. Later, I really want to take the time for that. Or perhaps something involving ethics – very interesting. Homeopathy isn’t my thing, but I am open to it. If I ever have my own practice, I’d also want to work with complementary medicines, have contacts. The fact that something isn’t scientifically proven doesn’t mean that it can’t work for people.”Erasmus University and you. Make it happen. Every day!
