Erasmus University and you. Make it happen. Every day! “Just be very happy, she said” (Mirjam Kuijpers, 22, Student Philosophy) “As a child, I went to the mosque five times a week; on Fridays to pray and I also went to the Koran school and to Arabic classes. My mother is Moroccan and a very strict Moslem. My father converted to Islam in order to marry her. My mother and I used to have frequent arguments about it. I never took her word for it, always asked questions and looked for inconsistencies in my mother’s reasoning about Islam. The Koran says that you may only have sex in wedlock, so that there’s no confusion about paternity. ‘But in the past, there was no contraception, Mum – now there is’, I said. We often had a laugh about it too. When I got older, I did things that frustrated her: going out, drinking, boys … She was always worried. One day, I said: ‘Mum, we’re different. We don’t agree on a lot of things, but I don’t want every conversation to end up in an argument between us.’ She agreed. ‘I just want the best for you’, she said. ‘Just be very happy.’ So now we don’t talk about religion and we have a much better relationship. Am I still religious? Less and less, actually. Studying contributes to that. I’ve started to understand the value of religion better, but at the same time, I’m seeing religion in a very contextual framework, as something which originated to give people something to hold on to and to structure groups. People often wrongly think that philosophy is ‘academic’, but I learn so much useful information every day!”Erasmus University and you. Make it happen.
