Erasmus University and you. Make it happen. Every day! " " (Amber, 20, Psychology and Philosophy student) "I always thought that ‘cancer only happens to someone else’. So the diagnosis was a huge shock. From an active student, I became a patient in a 4 x 4 isolation room. Acute lymphatic leukaemia usually only occurs in children. I just had bad luck, I wasn’t ill at all and only felt a couple of swollen glands behind my collarbone. It took quite a long time before the doctors were able to make their diagnosis. And then you end up in the medical maelstrom and everything goes into overdrive: 27 samples of blood were taken immediately, I was given a scan, an ECG, bone marrow aspiration. And then I had to visit the dental surgeon and gynaecologist. I was also given a long list of drugs to take. But the worst part is the bone marrow aspiration. After you hit 18, you don’t get a general anaesthetic anymore. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Because I have a high risk profile (5 protein deviations), I need a stem cell transplant. Without this operation, the chance of the cancer returning is very high. My 14-year-old brother spontaneously offered himself as a donor. He’s proved to be a 100% match, but because he’s a minor, the juvenile court has to give permission. A stem cell transplant is not risk-free. There’s always the risk of rejection and it can go wrong later. And I’ll probably be infertile. There wasn’t time to freeze my eggs. I’m not ready for children at all, but as a result of my illness, I’ve been forced to think about it. Fortunately, I’ve had a great deal of support from my boyfriend. Because lots of donors are needed, I’ve been lobbying for Matchis. It’s quite easy to register as a donor. You take some saliva and send it off. One day you may be called up if there’s a match. Bone marrow can now be taken via the blood. A few days beforehand you have to inject a growth hormone. This ensures that stem cells that are normally only found in the bone marrow can multiply and get into the bloodstream. I think it’s a lovely idea to be a living donor and save someone else’s life through a simple intervention."Erasmus University and you. Make it happen. Every day!
